Plastic, one of the locomotive sectors of our country, continues its international development. The world's leading manufacturers of plastics have come together in Istanbul as an indication of this development. Global Plastic markets and Trade Conference, which is the only specialized conference covering the entire plastic supply chain from raw material production to granul transport, was held on 11 - 12 June 2012 this year under the title of “shaping global trade while holding the corner of plastic market and trade”.

SEM plastic General Manager Yavuz Eroğlu, in his speech on the opening day of the conference, gave information about the development of the Turkish plastics industry in recent years while referring to the place and importance of plastics in our lives. Eroglu," plastic, about 50 years ago entered our lives and today we have come across a comfortable example everywhere in life. Plastics are used for many products such as glasses, pipettes, toothbrushes, lenses, computers, telephones, headphones, music sets, automotive spare parts, " he said. Eroğlu stated that the plastic sector grew rapidly in our country and said that Turkey will become the center of Europe and the near region in plastic. Eroglu pointed out that the sector finished 2011 with the third place in Europe, and that by the end of 2012 it will become the second largest producer in Europe after Germany, and added that the increase in export figures continued. 

In the conference, which brought together the biggest producers of plastics in the world, Eroglu talked about the development of the Turkish plastic industry and talked about his own life story and stated that he witnessed the progress of the sector from childhood and said, “My father used to take me to his workshop from time to time in the 1970s. Where plastics began in Turkey, Istanbul Bayrampaşa. Developing in small workshops that we are part of, this sector grew, grew, grew and today it was one of the largest producers in Europe.”

Yavuz Eroglu also mentioned the energy problems of our country and the sector and stated that Turkey imports more than 50 billion dollars each year, and most of our current account deficit stems from oil and gas imports. Eroğlu stated that rock gas, which has an important place among the energy resources of the future and which is expected to cover half of the natural gas in the United States by 2020, has recently been raised in our country as an alternative energy source, and said that rock gas has rich reserves in our country.

Yavuz Eroğlu emphasized that the most important problems of the sector are dependence on exports in raw materials and stated that new investments in petrochemicals are of great importance. Eroglu, “our country's strategic position and new incentive system, new investments in Turkey's attractiveness increased. Recently, Koksan group's pet investment in Gaziantep, Petkim's vertical integration investments and Polyplex Group's pet investments in Çorlu are some of the best examples we can give in this regard.”
